Prison-land Canada

Antony — December 7, 2011

A proposed key feature, announced yesterday, of the new Canada-US border deal is the implementation of exit controls on all individuals leaving the country. This is one more way in which government will track our movements. It’s not that long ago that crossing the US border was easy and hassle-free, the border guards would often not even bother looking at identification documents, and you did not need a passport. This measure will be added to other controls on our movements, like the silly requirement to show government ID before boarding aircraft.

Perhaps this is not a big deal by itself, but it is one more step in the direction of government controls. A step in the wrong direction.
